Sometimes all it takes to be more productive is
to sit next to someone who is being productive.
to sit next to someone who is being productive.
Who We Are
The Graduate Student Writing group was founded by graduate students at the University of Texas at Austin in Spring, 2014. We are an interdisciplinary group that helps connect graduate students across campus to set and meet goals for writing, presenting, and defending our academic work. We are a Registered Student Organization, which allows us improved access to UT facilities, funds, and networking opportunities.

What We Do
There are many ways to get involved with the Graduate Student Writing group:
- You may want to join a writing group - we'll help you get connected to other graduate students on campus with similar goals, or at similar places in their programs. We'll help you set up meeting locations and times (even virtual meeting spaces!), identify realistic goals for your work, and make it to graduation.
- For those of you who already have an active writing group, we can still help you with room reservations, and we will try to provide cool resources through this site and various workshops.
- If you are new to writing, or writing groups, join us for one of our daily "Sit Down and Write" groups. Be inspired by those around you and take charge of your academic work!
Why Interdisciplinary?
The Graduate Student Writing Group is designed to match up graduate students from around the UT Austin campus to work together in setting and meeting writing goals. The interdisciplinary approach is for two reasons:
- First, no matter your program, you will often have similar short and long term goals with other graduate students, regardless of discipline. This is a writing group - you are welcome to help review and edit each others' work, but the number one goal is to hold each other accountable for a set amount of writing work each day or week. Your goals might be measured in pages, time, or sections, but the idea is to use each session to advance a little.
- Second, let's face it - this is a chance to broaden your academic circle. Working within your own department can be nice, especially if you're collaborating on a paper or a thesis. Sometimes we need a chance to meet different people in the same stage as ourselves, particularly when that stage is the day-in, day-out process of writing.
How Does This Work?
Group Sessions
We host drop-in writing sessions on a daily basis around campus. The goal is to host these writing sessions at the same time and location every week. Our current writing session schedule is available on our Google calendar. |
Writing Pacts
Interested students will be matched up in groups of three or four, based on degree progress and priorities. The Writing Group can help facilitate meeting times and locations for your group, and get you started with some ideas of what your "writing pact" might entail. As the Writing Group grows, we also plan to provide a complete online forum for sharing information, hosting private writing group chats, and exchanging documents. |
